Learning Outcome 1 - Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1, M1)
In this client brief i have interpreted it that I will be needed to create a local North London music magazine that would be popular and have a large following. Following reading this brief I understand that there will be a print and online based music magazine. Knowing this, I believe that the conventions of the magazine front cover are extremely important as it is the front page of the magazine, therefore meaning that it could be vital to a reader and whether they decide if they want to purchase the magazine and read it. The conventions such as the Masthead is so important to the magazine because if the Masthead wasn't eye catching a lot of potential readers may not come across the magazine if they are not caught to the attention by the masthead.
The demographics that this North London music magazine would target, is young adults, and teenagers, for example 15 - 24 year olds, that live in the local area of North London, no matter what social grade they are, whether it is B,C1, C2, D or E as the magazine will be affordable.
3 Possible Ideas of music magazines
- The first idea is a Local North London Grime magazine, where the genre grime and the location North London will be the 2 focused talking points.
- The second idea is a North London based magazine with all the popular genres. While talking about the genres, the topics will specifically be focused on the area rather than focusing on a genre.
- The last idea, I will be focusing the magazine on one genre, however it is a very mainstream genre such as Pop. This pop magazine will focus on the North London local area. For example if a famous pop artist lives in North London they will likely be reported about.
Front cover:
- Masthead - The title on the top of the front cover which typically represents the name of the magazine, with a consistent font, and colour scheme.
- Cover lines - The essential articles inside the magazine are stated through sell lines, these are regularly seen at the right hand side of the cover.
- Main image - Typically showing the model/person/object directly associated with the main feature/article.
- Main cover line - The main cover line is smaller than the masthead but larger than the other cover lines. This is meant to be the eye catching text that pulls people into wanting to read more.
- Left Third - Contains the main feature article (typically an exclusive interview), as this is the core part of what may be inside the magazine.
- Strap line - Seen as an introductory headline below the masthead describing the magazine.
- Colour scheme - The colour scheme is a colour that will be catchy to the eye and recognisable allowing a specific colour to be able to link to the magazine.
- Slogan - The slogan is a well know quote or phrase that is associated with the magazine.
Idea 1
This is the font and name that i will be using for the first idea as it is a North London grime magazine, hence the NL which stands for North London and the Grime, which represents the genre, therefore clearly showing what the magazine is about.
As explained above, this magazine has to focus points, of which these are, the genre of music called grime and specifically based within the North London region. All reports are based around North London and any grime artists that live, perform and hang out within the area. This magazine will talk about new music, gossip, interviews, who hangs out with who and predicted new music, not to mention talks about gigs. This magazine would be popular mainly because, grime is becoming a very popular genre of music, especially in the demographic of North London. North London is extremely relevant to this magazine, especially as the title includes North London. The target audience of this magazine would be a typical unisex in the age of 15 to 25 years of age that are in the E or C NRS demographic group. This magazine would work and be successful because it is an up and coming extremely popular genre, this sort of music is very easily to relate to with unemployed and people living in a working class social status. A negative with this magazine would be that the genre may not be big enough to have a magazine and therefore would result in a much smaller amount of magazine sales than originally planned.
Idea 2
This magazine is based on the more popular genres of music that are based within the North London local area. I had this as one of my ideas because I believe it will be a really popular magazine and especially because it's back bone is how it all relates to North London. For example if an artist was seen in a North London shop then the magazine will let the readers know what store, what they bought and who they were with. The target audience of this magazine would be the typical unisex 12-20 year old, specifically teenagers because this genre is really popular with that age group, if they are male or female and all the sub topics, such as fashion, interviews, concerts and festivals are very popular with that age group. This could work because all magazines that are a similar topic are usually a world wide basis and the readers can't feel like they can relate to the stories. In this magazine it will talk about the local events and other projects happening locally. A weakness to this magazine is that there is not a set theme or genre for the magazine, therefore there isn't really a target audience as it is based on all genres. This therefore means that when advertising it will be a lot harder to attract the audience that I want because some of the audience may be a fan of pop while some of the other audience may like hip hop and this could be an issue when marketing.
Idea 3
This magazine is based on the Pop genre, but all topics and reports keep related to the North London. This magazine was one of my ideas because I believe that the pop culture is a lot more popular than any other music genre in this generation. This magazine is also relevant to North London because it is based around the artists, interviews, concerts, fashion within the pop genre that are in the local area. The target audience would be unisex all ages from 7 years old to 25 years of age. Making it have a very large audience. This would work because if the target audience is so large it could be mass produced eventually and expanded to not just North London, as the brief mentions. A set back this magazine idea may have, is that this magazine genre is a very popular genre and will have a lot of big competitors, this could mean it would be hard to get into the market and become popular as the competition will have more funding and popularity meaning they would get more sales, and possibly take my potential sales.
